SANEs

Project Role

Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANES) are uniquely trained to respond to the needs of sexual assault survivors. As first-responders, these nurses are equipped to provide survivors with quality medical care in an emotionally-sensitive manner. SANEs understand the experiences of survivors and their medical needs and collect forensic evidence, including sexual assault kits that are submitted police departments. By providing quality care for survivors, SANEs can help aid in the healing process. SANE representatives from Memorial Hermann Hospital and the Harris County Hospital District have provided their perspectives on ensuring victims receive proper medical care and that evidence collected is relevant for criminal justice system decision makers.
